State Energy and Environmental Targets
The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC), the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the New York Power Authority (NYPA), and the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) were tasked by Governor Andrew Cuomo to work together to meet the State’s aggressive energy and environmental targets, including:
- 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2030
- 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2050
- 50% of New York’s electricity to come from renewable energy sources (such as wind and solar by 2030)
- 600 trillion BTU increase in statewide energy efficiency from 2012 levels
- 1,500 MW of energy storage by 2025
- 185 trillion British thermal units (TBtu) of cumulative annual site energy consumption by 2025
In addition, in keeping with his ambitious vision for New York’s environmental and energy performance, Governor Cuomo’s 2019 Executive Budget included the following targets as part of the state’s proposed “Green New Deal”:
- 100% clean power by 2040
- Quadrupling New York’s offshore wind target to 9,000 megawatts by 2035, up from 2,400 megawatts by 2030
- Doubling distributed solar deployment to 6,000 megawatts by 2025, up from 3,000 megawatts by 2023
- More than doubling new large-scale land-based wind and solar resources through the Clean Energy Standard
- Maximizing the contributions and potential of New York’s existing renewable resources
- Deploying 3,000 megawatts of energy storage by 2030, up from 1,500 megawatts by 2025
- 100% carbon neutral electricity in New York state by 2040
