Suffolk Transportation Service and Bay Shore Union Free School District are introducing four electric school buses to their fleet using a $700,000 federal grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

These buses, which are made by Blue Bird, are entirely electric and result in zero emissions. They are able to travel up to 120 miles on a single charge and cost $0.17 per mile compared to $0.75 per mile for diesel buses.

Created in conjunction with PSEG Long Island (PSEG-LI), the pilot plan was pitched to NYSERDA through the agency’s REV Connect program, an online platform that connects tech companies and utilities with similar environmental ambitions, and included in PSEG-LI’s Utility 2.0 Long-Range Plan.
