New York State Bills Help Advance Energy Storage
Two bills were recently passed by the New York State Senate and Assembly (SB 5190 and AB 6571) that direct the NYS Public Service Commission, a Consortium member, to develop an Energy Storage Program and set a storage procurement target for 2030. According to the Assembly’s summation of AB 6571, the legislation “establishes the energy storage deployment program to encourage the installation of qualified energy storage systems; relates to commercially available technology that is capable of absorbing energy, storing it for a period of time, and thereafter dispatching the energy.” Many energy mavens predict that passage of the bills (which still await Governor Andrew Cuomo’s signature) could put New York among the rank of states at the forefront of the move toward energy storage.
