Project SIM Completed by National Grid and Reactive Technologies
NYSSGC member National Grid, the national grid operator for the United Kingdom (UK), and Reactive Technology, UK-based environmental engineering company, have partnered to complete the first technology able to continuously measure and monitor stability of an electricity grid (system inertia). According to Reactive Technology, until the innovative undertaking, known as Project SIM, inertia could be estimated by grid operators only at discrete time points. The continuous measurement of grid stability is increasingly important as renewables become a larger portion of the energy generation mix, with continued, accurate, and real-time monitoring of inertia enabling grid operators to respond more quickly to fluctuations in supply and demand, with the potential of reducing costs and consumer energy bills. Duncan Burt, Acting Director of System Operations at National Grid, noted that “National Grid is proud to be at the forefront of the energy revolution as we enable the uptake of renewable generation and deliver value for our customers and consumers.” For the press release, click here.
